Ch-ch-ch-ch-chakde

David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ has been remixed Bollywood-stylee (via MTV Desi). The visuals are an odd mix of ’80s rock and classical Indian dance — on the theory that anything Indian is exotic? I dig the Gurmukhi aglow, though it might look better in a crunked-up version of the kirtans on TV at six in the morning.

… producers Shawn Letts, Ben Galvin and Kelvin Singh tackled the task… The trio weren’t happy with simply using samples, so they scoured Singapore for the some of the finest Indian musicians and recorded the live instruments. [Link]

Does one go to Singapore for the finest Indian musicians? Like one goes to Bombay for world-class bagels.

I must say I like the look. I think you’re right to remark on the oddness–but that’s where cultural mixing should be. Things shouldn’t fit too nicely. That would be plain exoticism. I like the desi touch here not only because it’s rather beautiful but because it tells me that the centre cannot hold … by itself. You need brown. And if you’re really, really good, you get to be ultrabrown!
