Dissing the musical

Razib over at GNXP, the man who first got me blogging, sneers at the instant classic ‘Beedi’ from Omkara (Othello):

… speaking of “cultural differences,” see below (hint: Wonder Woman + pole dancing + lots of guys with palsy). I await the headline, “brown actor breaks his neck trying to be expressive with dance.” Is is me or do brown guys dancing joyously in unison seem kind of “gay.” [Link]

On the big screen this song was spectacular, and a buzz-cut, bull-necked Saif Ali Khan hardly fits the label. White guys dancing in unison can also be seen as tripping lightly, but few would say Hugh Jackman’s Broadway stint reflected on his sexuality.

As for Wonder Woman, she comes into the gym now and then and pounds on her abs for an hour straight. Then she films eye candy like this, closing the loop in my life, the yang to the yin. It’s a good thing Razib recognizes Bips, or I might have thrown the same question his way

wait, does this mean i am your “blog father”??? also, i mean “sneer is too strong a term” (before morning coffee). disoriented captures it…kind of like a saudi woman that’s never seen gay porn.

    oh Razib. Razib, Razib, Razib…

Brown guys dancing is attractive. more than one brown guy, dancing in unison, is fabulous. Example A: Shah Rukh Khan– not the most attractive specimen in the Bollyworld, however with great dancing skills and charisma, he’s probably propositioned on a regular basis. BongBreaker sent me an article, months back, about scientific documentation that being a good dancer makes one perceived as more sexy.

All I have to say to you is: 5-6-7-8!

    Is this the study?

they created computer-animated figures that duplicated the movements of 183 Jamaican teenagers dancing… higher-rated dancers were typically people with greater body symmetry.

Hmm, well, Hugh Jackman aside, I think the sexuality of dancing white guys depends on who’s dancing with them.

The thing about dissing this Omkara song is that it’s the wrong target. 90% of Bollyflicks are cheesy, but Omkara is one of the best of the year. It’s a bit high-concept, a rural Indian adaptation of Othello. Like redoing The Merchant of Venice Goodfellas-style. The male actors dancing in this clip, Vivek Oberoi and Saif Ali Khan, are actually Westernized pretty boys, but they’re playing rural thugs who dance rural-style.

    Well said Manish.
This song fits well in the movie…language in this song is consistent with the movie.
rural UP language..with a touch of Hariyanavi and Bihari.

    I love it :)
