Hari the comic

What I like about this Hari Kondabolu set from Jimmy Kimmel is that at long last, it’s semi-intelligent desi American humor. He disarms the ethnic issue at the top, like so many comics feel like they have to. But then he launches into fairly idiosyncratic material, mostly steering clear of accent jokes.

His site has clips from his gig on Comedy Central and this quotable about the Kohinoor:

Fuck the Queen of England. She’s an old white bitch wearing my grandmother’s jewelry.

Kondabolu’s style reminds me of a nerdier Arj Barker. Where Barker is a slacker with a chip on his shoulder, Kondabolu’s patter is faster and tighter, though a little less interactive. Like the rest of our polysyllabic South Indian brothas, he went with a shorter domain name.

He does a relaxed, political, NPR-ish interview around the five minute mark here with more footage of his Seattle set.

Check out more clips and his gig list, with upcoming dates in NYC (Apr. 14), Portland and Seattle.
