Over a hundred Bhutto supporters are reported to have perished in the attack on her motorcade. Metblogs Karachi is liveblogging:
Several journalists including a local private TV channel cameraman have now been identified among the dead… Geo is putting the number of dead at 124 and the number of injured at no less than 545… Questions are being asked everywhere: were the security measures taken enough or with such a large procession, it was logistically impossible to prevent such an incident? … [A journalist] is now speaking emotionally about the lack of protection given to journalists and media men… reporters from Jinnah Hospital add that security outside the hospital it self has been increased in fear of further attacks. In the week before her return Baitullah Masood, a Taliban commander from the tribal belt, vowed to send suicide bombers to kill her.
Witnesses said that two explosions occurred in quick succession near the truck carrying Ms Bhutto and party leaders as it passed through the massive crowd… Ms Bhutto was using a toilet inside the bus when the explosion occurred…
Many of the dead were thought to be party security officials and policeman accompanying the convoy, which started moving through Karachi eight hours earlier. A cameraman with a local television station also died… [Link]

“… the truck that Benazir Bhutto was riding on was surrounded by police cars — so the suicide bomber could not get onto the truck and could not get anywhere near it, so he blew himself up and that has caused many casualties, mostly among the policemen who were riding beside the truck.” … at least one bomb apparently had been placed in a car on the street… One eyewitness [said] he saw a car explode with three people inside… The scene… was “absolutely horrendous,” with blood literally running in streams down the street…
“We got within touching distance of her vehicle. There was no security around, nobody stopping vehicles getting close to [the motorcade].” … if such a convoy had been in the United States, security officials would have planned safe havens and alternate routes throughout the journey. However… Pakistani security was unable to do so because of the sheer number of people who turned out… Bhutto was provided with bullet-proof vehicles… extra police vehicles and electronic jammers…

“We blame one intelligence agency and we demand action against it… it is not done by militants, it is done by that intelligence agency,” Bhutto’s husband Asif Ali Zardari told private ARY ONE television. [Link]

This attack is tragic and sick. But it was also predicted well in advance — Pakistani intelligence had heard an attempt would be made on her life, yet they still couldn’t provide adequate security.
Intelligence reports suggested at least three jihadi groups linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban were plotting suicide attacks, according to a provincial official. “She has an agreement with America. We will carry out attacks on Benazir Bhutto as we did on General Pervez Musharraf,” Haji Omar, a Taliban commander in the Waziristan tribal region on the Afghan border, said by satellite telephone. Perhaps Nawaz Sharif dodged a bullet by being deported.
Update: A security official on GeoTV says Bhutto’s vehicle was boxed in by eight others, and the suicide bomb went off on the truck’s left flank. New details:
Bhutto refused to stand behind the bullet-proof screen on the truck. Bhutto had left the unprotected, open-air perch of the truck and gone below just before the explosions took place… [Link]
