La maja desnuda

A cherubic auntie sketches actress Jodie Whittaker at the end of Hanif Kureishi’s film Venus. The composition later morphs into the eponymous painting, Venus by Velásquez.

The artist Francisco de Goya painted another famous nude which was referenced in Elegy, another meditation on aging starring Ben Kingsley. Elegy and Kureishi both seem to equate old age with an intense need to sleep with fine young things. Which doesn’t set it apart from the other stages of manhood, really.

Actually, to be honest, Venus was a really good movie. And I’ve seen the painting in London (National Gallery is one of my favorite spots in the city), and it’s pretty awesome. My post was merely a memory of young me seeing the painting for the first time with my brother (that was my reaction), and the fact that everytime I see the words “young thing”, I think of Michael Jackson’s song. No offence intended.
