Lathering liberally

After posting about My Good Name Is Lenin, I learned filmmaker Kavita Pillay is a friend of a friend and a total sweetheart. Besides film, Kavita also haunts Boston crafts stores. She’s part of the young knitters brigade, who do it not out of gender expectations but purely for the fun of it.

So her other venture now comes into focus. Scrubya is a line of handmade soap that tweaks the dyslexic-in-chief. It comes in scents like Neo-Con Coriander, Cameliza Rice and Smell the Damn Coffee and was written up in the WaPo and Boston alt.weekly the Weekly Dig. Kavita donates all of the proceeds to Physicians for Human Rights and other groups cleaning up after Dubya:

Pillay, 32, temporarily sidelined the idea while studying in India on a Fulbright scholarship but returned in fall 2006 to Boston to officially launch her product. The soap is handmade, using coconut, palm and olive oils — and, unlike many mass-produced soaps, glycerin, which helps moisturize the skin. [Link]

The soaps themselves, handmade and vegetable-based, are quality little chunks of cleanser currently available in “three distinct scents that poll high with men, women, liberals, neo-cons, Iowans, New Hampshireites, coffee drinkers, tea afficionados, limousine liberals, the petite bourgeoisie, feudal landlords, MBAs, MFAs, school children, house plants, small animals and any other creatures that have felt tainted by two terms of Dubya.” [Link]

Her soon-to-come scent, Soapbama, is a clear bar that symbolizes ‘transparency in government.’ Somehow I don’t see a Hillary Cleanton on the way.

At first this soap idea sounded like Pope on a Rope. Now I think she’s onto something. But cleaning up after Dubya is going to take something stronger, like H2SO4. Get the soap here.

Should we now brace ourselves for repeated references to your ‘buddy’ Kavita Pillay? ;-)
