Reviving international-level soccer in India

You’ve probably heard of Vikash Dhorasoo, who may be the first desi soccer player to play in the World Cup. Here are two more desi soccer players from the Netherlands (thanks, hairy_d):

Kiran Bechan

Prince Rajcomar

Dhorasoo has some hoping for a revival of the Indian football team:

The 32-year-old Dhorasoo has also sparked renewed interest among expat players, with Indian soccer officials looking to bring them back to play for their country…

India captain Baichung Bhutia’s stint with English club Bury five years ago also brought focus on Indians. Officials are pinning their hopes on young talent like former Dutch under-20 strikers Kiran Bechan and Prince Rajcomar.

Ultimate success in their bid could revive soccer in India, twice former Asian Games champions who have faded away even on their own continent over the last 20 years. [Link]

More on Kiran Bechan:

Ajax winger Kiran Bechan has committed to FC Groningen until the summer of 2008… Bechan (born Amsterdam, 12 September 1982) signed his first contract at Ajax in 1999, having come through the youth ranks of the Amsterdam club. [Link]

[...] Although we have a bit of representation this year, the most entertaining soccer clip (yes, I went to high school in southern california, so it’s soccer) I could find was the closing credits for Bend it Like Beckham. Watch ‘em with hope in your heart for 2026. [...]

i am based in Egland, UK. there is alot of talented Asian football players here in the UK, who have the talent to be pro footballers. they are not given the chance or are released by the clubs when they are 18yrs old. i have been told by certain people within football, that we will not see a Asian football player in the EPL, for another 10yrs……..WHY. I have seen players of less ability than some Asian players, given Pro contracts by clubs, ahead of the Asian players who have more ability…why. we here in the UK, need a wealthy business man or a group of business men together and buy a EPL club and give the Asian players here hope , in terms of ie if you are good enough to become a Pro footballer, you will be offered a contract, regardless of your backround, colour, religion etc.
