Sliders

Check out the intricate White Tiger cover in Bulgarian, a Cyrillic spin on the tale of the übermensch. When I first learned Punjabi, that Gurmukhi script used the same glyphs as Hindi for different sounds struck me as an elaborate joke. I was being punked by an unseen prankster. And with Cyrillic: the ‘H’ is an n, the backward ‘N’ is an ee, the ‘P’ is an r and so on. It’s like the alternate reality in The Ground Beneath Her Feet: it’s the same world, only slid over sideways when you weren’t looking.

the rosetta stone for me… the word i knew before i knew what it meant - Pektopah. it’s the way to a man’s heart.
Ah, Pektopah. So delicious. Another word I looked for in Moscow: tooalyet.
Manish, really now. There are other authors besides Rushdie.
