Slumdog at the Golden Globes (updated)
Slumdog Millionaire just won best screenplay at the Golden Globes. It was written by Simon Beaufoy, a miracle worker who kept the scaffolding of Q&A but stuffed it with the innards of Maximum City.
More to come, perhaps. How cool would it be if M.I.A. and A.R. Rahman shared the award for best score?
Update: Et voilà, it wins best original score. P. Diddy awkwardly hugged Rahman on stage. Surreal.
Update 2: Best director, Danny Boyle. Presumably if a movie has the best director, screenplay and score, it wins best picture.
Update 3: The most excellent In Bruges gets some love: best actor, Colin Farrell. Alexander is forgiven.
Update 4: Best boho sexual fantasy goes to Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Go to the source, Sex and Lucía.
Update 5: Mickey Rourke for best actor in The Wrestler. Is homophobia a factor in bypassing Milk?
And the big finale… Slumdog wins best picture. Four for four, the second-highest total in Globe history. Bandra (Freida) in the hizzouse ! Aamir Khan is the most annoyed man in India right now.
Heath Ledger richly deserved the supporting nod, but The Dark Knight was cheesy. Wall-E, which won best animated picture, was a bit sterile for my taste, and I say that as a sci-fi fan. Biggest surprise: no nomination for The Happening?

Why did Anil Kapoor jump up like a jack in the box and wave his arms and cheer when his name was mentioned by Boyle? Ewwch. Good for all of them, though.
Yay Slumdog. Very well deserved. 4/4.
cause it was genuine excitement, restraint is not always becoming. I personally loved the fact that he did.
You forgot to mention the “pelvic dance.”
What about SRK’s sequin tie? Awesome stuff. :)
I am so glad about Rahman’s win!
ARGH. It’s KILLING me that I’m missing this. I’m depending on the comments here and on SM to keep updated. Need pics! Need vids!
Aamir Khan is the most annoyed man in India right now.
Mwahahaha…
I’m so conflicted about Farrell and In Bruges. The movie was so good and he definitely deserved the win. But now how many horrible Alexander and SWAT-esque movies am I going to have to put up with, convinced that Farrell is not just another himbo who doesn’t shower regularly? Such dilemmas!
Also, I think it’s just time for me to admit that I am in love with Anil Kapoor. And when he’s being ridiculous, even moreso.
Here are some clips (post punk cinema club–grab these clips because they will be taken down within hours, if not minutes. If you don’t know how to grab videos, download orbitdownloader.com and use it to “grab” files).
Anyway, of A. R. Rahman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cBy0crMuCk
SRK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp9JdMPH60o
Yep, Farrell in Bruges is like Ledger in Brokeback– pretty boy bidding for a real role. But does he cross over, or does he return to the blond wig?
Kapoor’s moustache makes the look. It is defiant. It is full service.
Nice to hear Kate Beckinsale pronounce AR.Rahman’s name correctly. SRK was a little condescending to Freida…I thought.
Me - you are DA BOMB. (And thanks for the info, too, I usually use keepvid.com) Anyone get Anil flipping out?
It’s his tashan!
I think I find him so entertaining because it strikes me just as if one of my mama’s or masa’s were suddenly sent to the GG’s and wound up on stage.
Also, I must be dense, because I do not understand the Duchovny joke about A.R. Rahman’s name.
Second only to his bouffant.
Funny how we’re talking about Anil’s tashan. I was just writing up the review to Tashan and cited his fishnet wifebeater + neckerchief ensemble as the granddaddy of ishtyle. Screen cap forthcoming…
alas! that srk didn’t thrust his pelvis. dil mein mere hai dard-e-disco.
i loved that sequined scarf/tie too. it reminds me of a very glam updated version of dev anand’s signature accesory. what is about srk that i can forgive his acting and movies? ah, rakish charmers, you’ll be the end of me.
Didn’t Shah Rukh wear a patterned ascot in the Don update too?
naah. iss that good. and the Boss is the boss.
It would have been fun if Anil Kapoor had removed his tuxedo and waved it around the way Saurav Ganguly did with his shirt at Lord’s!
milieu,
Exactly, where is everyone’s sense of fun, I also wish he was piss drunk and did something more over the top :)
Aww, I’m happy for the love this film is getting although I don’t really believe in a best picture - I like the top 10 lists better. Pics are different styles and genres, how can one be the very, very best? Okay, that’s stupid, sometimes one does stand out.
Anyway, I thought Anil Kapoor jumping up and down was cute, I was confused by the ‘pelvic dancing’ comment, but thought SRK looked very dapper, and I dunno, I liked that Kate Winslet won.
(Why must actresses always play the ditz? Can’t they accept an award with a zingy little speech, like Tina Fey, whom I heart!)
OMG… I just saw the video of boyle accepting the award and I LOVE Anil Kapoor. What’s wrong with being happy yaar. If you’re happy - why not let it out. I am sure a little bit of drink helped ;-) but YEA! Here’s to Mr India himself.
SRK had to remind us who’s hips don’t lie. Honestly I was surprised to see him. I’m so happy that this picture is sweeping it up!
meant to say “whose hips”.
I’m actually charmed by Anil’s OTT-ness. If Kate Winslet can blubber on stage for ten minutes then AK can be excited for his movie. I feel the way Brimful does - this is what I would expect my uncles to do, except none of them are cool enough to do anything this spontaneous.
However, I am glad he didn’t pull a Saurav. It’s one thing to have an excited AK at the Globes, it’s another to watch a furry in action.
No way! After finally watching the clip, I must report I’m disappointed by such a lackluster response from Anil “I ACT IN ALL CAPS!” Kapoor. I expect more from my premiere source of OTT excitability. e.g. ripping his clothes apart… swinging his jacket in the air… That’s what I pay money to see. I guess I didn’t pay money for the GGs though.
Oh my, tppcc, thanks for that trip down memory lane. It’s hard to recall that there were days when Anil Kapoor was predominantly featured as the hero of films!
Also, SRK definitely did the tie-around-neck-with-shirt-open-collar in Don- I know, because when I watched it with my cousin, we burst into laughter every time we saw it. It’s weird to hear him referred to as the King of Bollywood, as he was introduced last night, however– I guess this is just a sign of age, but I find it hard for anyone to take that title away from the Big B.
Anil Kapoor was interviewed on the red carpet and said “this is a historic day, A HISTORIC DAY! Bollywood and Hollywood coming together!” Um, OK.
I’m really happy Slumdog cleaned up and I also enjoyed Anil’s exuberance. More than that though, I’ve enjoyed telling every Indian who mentions Slumdog that it’s a British movie ;)
What with three other awards going to Brits, quite a good evening. Except for the Winslet histrionics.
AK and Freida seem to be in all the pics kind of stuck to Boyle with Fevicol and edging out poor Dev Patel. Good old Mumbai hustling at its best.
As Rohin says its hardly Hollywood + Bollywood. I mean Boyle is not exactly your usual Hollywood director.
Pity the kids weren’t there. The youngest trip were the best part of the movie.
For all those who didn’t watch it live, you have all the relevant parts right here. One could spend an eternity looking for them on youtube. I almost did, as there are so many to sift through, and many ‘taken down’ already. Thanks for the post and especially for posting the clips. This isn’t like the 1970s Bollywood clips you often post. Not a single one of these folks was around then - not ARR, not FP, not DP, not even the 1959-born AK, who, I just learnt, is actually not from the famous Kapoor family (Prithviraj, Raj, Shashi, Shammi, etc). The clip ppcc had posted made me assume he was, but he isn’t.
Thanks again.
…not even the 1959-born AK, who, I just learnt, is actually not from the famous Kapoor family (Prithviraj, Raj, Shashi, Shammi, etc).
Shashi related to Anil?!
*bluster of disbelief*
ONLY IN MY HEART.
brimful, I wait for the day when Anil makes his angry tapori comeback movie. They can call it Tashan 2: Last Impresun Ij Back. Or the Jhakaas Chronicles.
thanks for the links to videos Manish, I missed the golden globes, glad I got to see clips through ur post. what a proud moment, Rahman richly deserves the award for his creativity in music.. though I didnot see the movie as yet.
