Sugar Sammy

Montreal comedian Sugar Sammy kills ‘em in Toronto (via Remains of the Desi):

Sammy has been voted the Number 1 comedian in Montreal by readers of the Montreal Mirror… His experiences as a Punjabi growing up in francophone Quebec as well as his time as a night club promoter found their way into his earlier sets. [Link]

He’s got some good material, but he treads far closer to stupid/racist ethnic stereotyping than Russell Peters. The final joke of the show is identical to a Peters line, but I’m not sure who ripped whom.

    I haven’t finished watching it yet… but the bit with the arabs/terrorism thing is pretty lame… and the arabic… just lame.

    Some of his bits (like the arab bit) are somewhat cringe-inducing but i laughed out loud at a lot of his stuff (including the bit about his visit to the US south).

    And he does stand-up in french also …

    I know that shouldn’t be surprising since he’s from Montreal, but still kinda impressive to be funny in several languages. (Though since I don’t speak it I can’t judge how funny he is)

    I think he’s really good. I’d even say better than Russ Peters in some ways. The bilingual bit is a total plus, and given the sorry state of relations between desis and Quebecois, he could so be a ‘desi brand’ ambassador to the Quebecois.

    Russel P hands down. Ive watched both. Russell P is a fenius and hes original.Infact the guy is simply comical.The fact tht he interacts w the audience says that hes confident and smart as he wouldn know what the audience might gonna say. Sugar Sammy?Even the name is lame…
