The Riverdale Raj
I went to high school in Saratoga, California, which started out as a quiet retirement community. At the time there were less than five desis at Saratoga High; one or two Iranians whom we vaguely suspected of being desi, though the names threw us; and a handful of East Asians. It was the kind of place where people would try to set you up with the only desi girl in your class, because how cute would that be?
Over the last decade, the high schools in neighboring Cupertino turned largely Asian as young tech worker families moved in for the schools. Saratoga, once one of the whitest spots in the valley, added lots of desi and East Asian faces to the high school yearbook.
Over the past 10 years, the proportion of white students at Lynbrook has fallen by nearly half, to 25% of the student body. At Monta Vista, white students make up less than one-third of the population, down from 45% — this in a town that’s half white…
Many white parents say they’re leaving because the schools are too academically driven and too narrowly invested in subjects such as math and science at the expense of liberal arts and extracurriculars like sports and other personal interests. The two schools… are too Asian. [Link]
And now Raj Patel invades Riverdale (thanks, shlok). The circle is complete.

loved loved reading archie growing up. although the writers were really lazy trying to find an Indian name, ‘Raj Patel,’ it is so strange that the kid is actually hip. i mean is he skate boarding? that is such a different direction from the others Desis in the media. what out-raj-ous behavior!
